The Silly Season

December 13th, 2008

Hi,

It is but 11 sleeps ’til Christmas. I hope everybody is beginning to embrace the Holiday Season.

One thing that is greatly different from America is that Australia immediately associates Christmas with summer, the beach, or water in the least, a hot day, and attempting to cool off, mostly with the aid of air-conditioning (newly installed in our case :). But, even though this different association, we are shown the same movies every year, the American interpretations, all filled with snow, and Santa. Although most movies depict the same sort of Santa, wearing his red suit, white beard and hair, and his ‘large’ girth, they all interpret him in a different way, and how his sleigh is powered, and how he gets around.
But what I always find MOST amazing, with all movies, and yes, I realise that it is a movie, and not real, but, other than Harry Potter, EVERYTHING happens in America. Why is it that aliens only ever turn up in America, why don’t they turn up in Ethiopia, or Finland. Magic is only real in America. Almost every superhero ever invented is an American. You would think that, with China being more than 4 times America’s population, would have at least one superhero, with superpowers so extraordinary that it would blow people’s minds. Yet America has Spiderman, Superman, Fantastic Four, Batman, and Countless St. Nick’s. Granted Batman doesn’t actually have real superpowers, but you know what I mean.

And, I need a haircut.

That’s all,
David

Children’s Self-Esteem

December 4th, 2008

Hi All who read this, if there are any.

Recently while at work, I heard on the radio that “Teacher’s must find a new colour to mark with”.
Apparently, some stupid organisation says that the colour red is too intimidating and scary for children, so now, teachers have to use another colour to mark with.

Now, I think this is completely stupid. School is supposed to be your first steps toward independance, getting a job, being successful in life. A school is NOT designed to be a self-esteem builder for children. It is a facility that is for the teaching of relevant material, and for children to learn it. Teachers should not have to worry about a child’s self esteem at school. If a child is doing badly, say something about it. My mother is a teacher, and she told me that on report cards, in the comments section, you aren’t allowed to right “Not performing at grade whatever standard” or “not very smart”. No, you must say “Has not yet reached full potential”. If the kid doesn’t get 1 + 1 by Grade 7, either they are not paying attention, or have a problem. It’s not the teachers job to baby a child, to make them feel good about themselves. That is horrible preperation for life.

I can guarentee you that a boss in the workplace is not going to change the tone of voice that he fires you with because he thinks it will hurt your self esteem. He is just going to come straight out and say it. And if a kid, just out of school, who has never had a teacher tell him he is not the smartest, and has only ever been marked in blue pen, is told that he is fired, he’s going to breakdown. He has never had to deal with anything before in his life, because his teacher has always been there to pick him back up. So now what does this kid do? There is no-one to pick him back up now. He is in the real world, and they are NEVER going to enforce a regulation saying “Bosses may only fire employees using a soft voice and saying “You tried your best, but unfortunately, we can’t keep you employed here, because we aren’t good enough to have someone like you working for us.”

It’s retared, and all you politically correct people can jump off a bridge onto a very hard piece of concrete.

That reminded me of something. Racism is being derogatory towards another race, like saying, all Asians are complete retards, and Black people look like that because they don’t shower.

Saying, that guy is black, or that guy is white, or that guy is asian, or saying Oh, That Asian over there is NOT RACIST. It is a way of identifying people.

The xBox Mod, And Buses

December 3rd, 2008

Hi,

So, the xBox mod has not gone to well. The gas solder ran out of butane, and then, I had to go to work, but James went and bought a brand new, electric, heat controlled solder and tried again. Apparently, no luck, although I haven’t seen the solder attempt.

Today was really hot. I am now sitting in the air-conditioned bliss of my dad’s home office. I went for a swim, had a cold shower, and got ready for work, which, once again is imposing itself onto my day to day activities.

Me and my father went to the dump today, and on the way, I saw yet another road contruction project. It got me thinking, buses are probably a lot cheaper than new roads. The road near my house, where they are upgrading it from 1 lanes in each direction, to 2 lanes in each direction, and it stretches not very far at all, yet is still costing $35 mil.
I’m sure running a couple of busses up Pullenvale Road would not total up to $35 mil. and there would be a substantial offset, with commuters paying for there fares. Now you say, well, the communters are paying tax for these roads anyway. Well, in reply, I say, yes they are. But, if they put a couple of extra bus routes in, it’s not going to cost anybody anything extra, because the State Government is still going to get paid the same tax for the roads, which may be put towards improving some.

On this new stretch of road outside of my house, they have these two lanes in each direction, but on either side of this new link, it is still one lane in each direction. Essentially, what they are doing, is allowing cars to get into a traffic jam quicker. But, the government don’t really care about that. By putting in these roads, the robotic public will assume that the government is doing something nice, but in essence, they are doing nothing.

I have to go to work now,
so that’s all.

David.
P.S. - Send me presents. Only 22 sleeps till christmas!

Hi

The Second Day Of Holidays

December 1st, 2008

Hi,

There wasn’t any great poetry in the title today, but it wasn’t really neccessary.

Today, I am heading over to my friend James’ house so that we can pursue our xbox modification.
We have been planning it for ages, and while originally contemplating to “soft-mod”, or use software to mod the xbox, so no chip was needed.

That was going to take to much effort, so we settled on buying two modchips, one for each xbox, and soldering them to the xbox via the debugging port. The chips were suprisingly affordable, and the shipping was great. One problem was that they had only sent one connector, but we called them up, and told them, and they sent another connector out that day. I would recommend them if you want to modify any of you consoles, or buy a slot one flash card for your ds. google: techsick.

So, yeah. I want to put xbox media center, or XBMC, onto it, which plays all your media, like music, video, pictures, that sort of thing, via a network, or from the harddrive that is inside of the xbox. I also want to install Avalaunch, a custom dash, for reasons unknown to me, but it seems like a good idea.
But now we have the issue of how to access all these little programs. Well, some smart cookie has come up with a program, that, once installed, is capable of incredible things. Pretty Much, you set it up, and when you boot the xBox, you hold down certain buttons on the controller, and it will boot to a different program depending on the buttons you hold. The name of this magnificent software, unfortunately, escapes me.

Then, I am working at 4. I wonder who it will be with.
Oh well, I am bored, and the harsh summer, which isn’t actually as hot as most people would make it out to be, is really getting to me. The humidity is incredible, it’s hot and sticky.

I best be off, maybe for a swim.
Please, register with my blog, makes posts, and comment on mine.

Have fun,
David

Grade 10 is at an End

December 1st, 2008

Hi,

No need to thank me for my spectacular piece of poetry, so graciously forming itself in the title of this post.

Well, the title pretty much says it all.  I have just finished grade 10, and today, Monday the 1st December, I slept in.

Looking back on the year, it seems to have gone by fairly quickly.  -many friendships formed, and an equal amount of friendships destroyed.

The days seemed to go by slowly, but looking back on it all, while being eaten to death by mosquitoes, it all seems to have gone rather quickly.  I’m going to miss it.  It has by far been my favourite grade, for reasons that not even I can begin to explain.  But yeah, I enjoyed it immensely.

Perhaps it is because, over the years, as I have grown up, I have come to realise how quickly life goes by.  When you first start school, you love it.  You feel as though it is your first step to becoming the elusive “grown-up”.  And then as you  get slightly older, it gets more and more boring.  You dread going to school everyday, whether it be because of the schoolyard bully that constantly picks on you, because you’re bored with the teacher’s lame attempt at subject matter, or just because it’s school.  And, then you get older.  I think it is about at my age that we start seeing how great school is.  Before you start calling me names, I too dread classes.  But without school, your social life would be dead.  And now, you may say, “I meet people outside of school”.  Well, I spit on your attempt at humour and satire.  Without schools teaching you the backbone of communication and social skills, you wouldn’t have known HOW to meet people outside of school.

Hmm, enough about that.  One final note, I am going to miss you Grade 10!
And you, T-Y. I haven’t known you long, but you’re pretty cool! Have fun on the coast! :)

In other news, now that holidays have started, I am already beginning to feel the twitch of having so much time, and so little to do.  And the harsh Australian Summer, made even harsher by the country’s current financial crisis, is not making it much better.  But that is a different topic that I may or may not choose to raise later on in this post.  But it’s not all bad news.  I am working, which I really enjoy.  The people there are great, and the work is easy.  If you’re bored, come visit me at McDonald’s Toowong.  I have just 19 and a half hours this week, barely enough to pay the non-existant rent.  But soon, when Daniel get’s his act together, I should have close to 30, and hopefully more.  But no more than 38 a week, stupid government.

I did tell Daniel that I would work 200 hours a week, and that was cool, until I realised that there weren’t even 200 hours in a week.  Proves my math skills, ey?  The kids who I work with refuse to believe the fact that I am doing Maths B, Maths C, and Physics.  Perhaps it’s because I don’t come across as a very intelligible person.

And now, while subject hopping, I come to the point of this website. -I hardly ever use it.  I have owned it for a couple of months now, and all I have done is set up a GREAT proxy (www.go.bsstuff.com)

I think that I should use it more often.  This is but the second post I have made.  And I think that I should start using it more.  But I don’t know for what.

Well, I am off for now.  Mum is calling for dinner, the mosquitoes are killing me slowly, draining my body of it’s limited supply of blood, and the humid cold is really getting to me.

Bye for now,
David

The First Post

August 29th, 2008

So, after the default “Hello World” post, this is MY first post on wordpress.

It’s an interesting concept, that has developed over time, through many people writing things on their own websites, one of which I have just purchased, by and by, and has evolved into one of the most read things ever.

But not as a single author’s work, but as a collaborative effort by millions around the world, often posting “logs” or diary entries on the “web”, hence the term weblog.

Ahh, well I think that’s about it for now.

Don’t know what my plan’s are for the immediate future, but I am working tomorow, 10:30 till 2 at Toowong.

So if you wanna come down, be my guest.

And now to finish off my stupid english assignment.
